When will Bali have subway?
Anyone who has visited Bali recently has certainly experienced that getting around the island, especially around the most popular tourist destinations such as Canggu, Kuta, or Ubud, is no easy at all. Traffic jams are present every day.
There is hope that the situation will improve. After several years of preparations and negotiations, it was announced that the lead investor for the subway project has been selected: PT Bumi Indah Prima. The groundbreaking is scheduled to begin in September 2024. The new subway is designed to facilitate transportation on the island.
The Bali Metro Project (Bali LRT – Bali Light Rail transit) is an underground transit system connecting the airport with location in south Bali and Ubud. The first phase should be completed in 2028, the whole project should be completed in 2031. The construction of the subway aims to ease the traffic on the island.
The construction of the Bali Subway mega project will be carried out in four phases as follows:
- First phase: I Gusti Ngurah Rai Airport – Central Parking Kuta – Seminyak – Berawa – Cemagi;
- Second phase: I Gusti Ngurah Rai Airport – Jimbaran – Udayana University – Nusa Dua;
- Third phase: Central Parking Kuta – Sesetan – Renon – Sanur; and
- Fourth phase: Renon – Sukawati – Ubud.
In addition to the construction of the metro, other projects are laso planned. For example “Beach tram”, which should connect the airport with the areas of Kuta, Legian and Seminyak.
